Privacy policy

Your privacy, clearly explained.

This policy explains what Hitchhike the Internet collects, why it is used, who receives it, and the choices available to you.

Who is responsible

Hitchhike the Internet is the operator responsible for this website. Privacy questions, access requests and complaints can be sent to [email protected] with “Privacy” in the subject line.

Information we process

  • Essential preference data: a first-party cookie records whether you allowed analytics or advertising.
  • Technical and security data: hosting and security providers may process IP address, browser, device, request time, requested URL and security signals in ordinary server or CDN logs.
  • Optional analytics: after consent, Google Analytics and PostHog may process page views, referrers, device information, approximate location, directory interactions and pseudonymous identifiers.
  • Optional advertising: after advertising consent, Google AdSense may process device, network, consent and ad-interaction data. Advertising personalization and ad-user-data consent are disabled by this site.
  • Messages you send: if you email us, we process your address, message and attachments to respond.
  • Public listing information: company and product profiles use publicly available business information and recorded sources, not private consumer dossiers.

Why we use it

We use essential data to operate the site, remember privacy choices, prevent abuse and maintain security. With consent, we use analytics to understand aggregate use and improve navigation, content and comparisons. With separate consent, advertising supports operation of the directory. We use contact information to answer requests and correct records.

Consent and your choices

Optional analytics and advertising remain off until you choose them. You can accept, decline or enable each category separately, and can withdraw consent at any time through “Privacy preferences” in the footer. Withdrawing advertising consent reloads the page to remove the advertising library.

Service providers and transfers

We use infrastructure and service providers such as Cloudflare, Hetzner, Google and PostHog. These providers may process data in Canada, the European Union, the United States or other jurisdictions under their own contractual and legal safeguards. External links open third-party sites governed by their own policies.

Retention

The consent cookie lasts up to one year unless you delete it earlier. Aggregate profile-view counts do not contain a visitor identity. Analytics and advertising data follow the configured retention periods of their providers. Security logs and correspondence are retained only as long as reasonably necessary for security, legal, operational or response purposes, then deleted or anonymized.

Access, correction and deletion

You may ask whether we hold personal information about you and request access, correction or deletion where applicable. You may also withdraw consent or object to certain processing. We may need to verify your identity and may retain information where required for security, legal claims or compliance.

Safeguards and children

We use access controls, encrypted connections, restricted credentials, backups and monitoring proportionate to the data we handle. No system is perfectly secure. This site is intended for a general business and technology audience and is not directed to children under 13.

Complaints and updates

Contact us first so we can investigate. Depending on where you live, you may also contact the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada, the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner for British Columbia, or your local privacy regulator. Material policy changes will be posted here with a revised date.
